What's new in the backyard...

April 16, 2022:

New friends coming to a backyard near you!

Be aware of nests whenever you’re exploring local ponds, lakes, and rivers in your community. Look but do not touch! Also, be sure not to disturb mother goose if she is sitting on her eggs

ATTENTION: Reports of new predators

Coyotes are a common sight across the Mid-Atlantic these days, so here a few tips to keep you and your pets safe from an incident with our new neighbors.

1. Do not feed coyotes
2. If you see a coyote, maintain eye contact, do not run away, and try to be as loud as possible
3. Keep your pets on a leash whenever possible
4. Do not create unnecessary conflict! Coyotes are here to stay, so communal respect will be the key to all of us getting along.

Suspects spotted attempting to cross busy roadways. Proceed with caution!

Be on the lookout for our amphibious friends this spring during rainy days and after storms. Frogs and toads tend to end up on the roadways either attempting to cross or seeking warmth during wet evenings. Share the word and keep our frogs safe as they migrate across our neighborhoods and backyards to ponds, lakes, and streams! And always be on the lookout for frogs and toads while driving on a spring rainy night. A little careful driving can make a huge difference for our amphibians.

Why did the frogs cross the road? So they wouldn't get toad!
